Grace
The other day I was on the phone to a friend of mine who has very recently lost his wife. As he answered the phone I heard myself say the words “Hey, how are ya!” Ack! What the? I wished I could claw those words back! I definitely know better. It is very humbling to have to acknowledge uttering such an insensitive greeting. This North American greeting that flows so readily from our mouths before our brains get in gear. It also reaffirms for me how difficult it is to navigate around and through grief. We will say and do the wrong things at times because we are human. This is the reason that we need to show each other grace and the reason that God pours out his grace on us. He surrounds us with his grace to cover our missteps. I am so thankful for that. I will also be much more diligent about watching my words.
