Light
There is a line in Leonard Cohen's song "Anthem" that says, "there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in." It's a line that inspired the title of Louise Penny's book, "How The Light Gets In." The idea that the fractures of our hearts allow light in is quite a beautiful concept. But, I think the idea goes further than that. Light travels in straight lines and can only pass through or be reflected. There must be more than just letting the light in; somehow it must also be allowed to travel back out. I think perhaps we need to claw the cracks in our hearts wider so that light can pass through or reflect back on to others. This reflection of light is really what Jesus calls us to do. Shine light on others.
The CrossFit gym in Kenora does a workout in honour of Mikael near the anniversary of his death. His partner, Shelley, shared with me some of the comments made by participants this year. Here are a few.
"Mike was one of the kindest people and one of my biggest supporters when I joined CrossFit. He cheered me on, trained with me, pumped me up when needed and was one of the first people to tell me how awesome he thought it was that I was becoming a competitive weightlifter."
"I have saved every encouraging message he has ever sent me and I use them when I'm feeling down."
There is no doubt that Mikael understood the importance of shining light back towards others.
